Swimmers of the Week - GHWO v. Hays, JCC and Courtyard

A huge congrats to our two swimmers of the week!  They will be awarded a Powerbar towel and treats at this week’s ribbon ceremony!

Female: Lina Guerrero, age 15

This week’s female swimmer of the week is Lina Guerrero.  When Lina showed up at the meet on Saturday, she explained she had the lingering effects of a throbbing migraine headache from the night before.  She came to participate in the relays because she didn’t want to let her teammates down.  Although she wasn’t feeling well and diving in hurt her head, she swam with full effort in the two relays, giving GHWO a first-second domination in both 15-18 year girls relays!  Ambivalent about swimming the 50 fly because of the effort involved and her aching head, she sought my opinion.  When I encouraged her that I thought she wouldn’t regret racing, she stepped up and raced in the 15-18 girls 50 fly, placing 2nd.  Ultimately, Lina’s unselfish and sacrificial participation on Saturday contributed to a Dolphin victory (without her points we wouldn’t have won).  Lina, you are an amazing example of a true team player!

Male: Leland Huffman, age 13

Leland Huffman is one of our hard-working 13-14 year old boys.  This is his third year on the team, but Saturday’s meet was his first one ever!  He has worked so diligently in practice this season, coming daily with a great attitude and improving rapidly over the weeks we’ve been together.  When I saw his amazing breaststroke, I asked him to please consider swimming in a meet!  This weekend, he decided to take up the challenge, and compete in the meet in the 13-14 year old 50-yard breaststroke.  Displaying amazing intensity and effort, Leland won his heat and had the best smile at the finish!Congrats, we are so proud of your courage and effort this weekend!  Way to go, Leland!
